MAD-AS - the MAD AutoSampler!

Introducing the all new, OPEN HARDWARE OPEN SOURCE, 3D printed, low cost, automatic sampler specifically designed for taking many tens/hundreds of small samples over the course of a day or several days. All done using open source and open hardware, you can download our 3D print design and then go to your local electronics store and buy everything you need to assemble this in less than 15mins (N.B. 3D printing takes 12hrs). Total cost is estimated to be <$30AUD.

We have designed a new autosampler that is flexible in its size (i.e. can fit into space constrained pipes) and scalable in terms of sampling volumes (i.e. to sample high volumes for low concentrations). The MAD-AS estimated cost is $25 AUD, sits in the water column and contains a 3D printed peristaltic pump that takes water and places it into the tubing, which is also used to hang the device in the sewer/stream. A small microcontroller (based on the Arduino platform), two 3.7v 700mAh batteries and Near Field Communication enables the device to be programmed and initiated. While it currently does time-based sampling (it can sample continuously for 10 days), future designs will include our open-hardware depth and velocity sensors to enable flow-based sampling. Telemetry will be included to initiate sampling based on a trigger (i.e. a sewer overflow).

MAD-AS Trials - in sewage!

Check out our new trials of the MAD-AS at sewage treatment plants. These little guys work pretty well, we think you'd agree:
